Macintosh Malware - MacProtector

I just helped a Macintosh user who had received a message through her browser which stated that her computer had been infected with numerous viruses and malware. It urged her to download a program to clean up her computer. When downloaded it put an installer package called MacProtector.mpkg on her desktop which if installed would have actually installed a program to repeatedly report numerous viruses and offer to clean the computer by registering and paying a $79 dollar fee.

DON'T DO IT!!!!!

If you already have installed it, follow the instructions at this site to manually remove the program.

I like the instruction on this site because it leads you through the manual procedures to remove it without urging you to install a program to remove it which again exposes you to the possibility that the site itself is a malware site and the removal program will simply be another malware program and you will dig the hole even deeper.

Please let us know if anyone has been infected by this malware program.

Don't go to Apple with Malware Problem

Even though Apple continues to vigorously improve OS X to be impervious to virus attacks, they don't acknowledge and don't provide any support to users who have become infected with the latest Malware. This may be a misdirected attempt to protect Mac's reputation for not having to worry about viruses. I don't think this position will persist but in the meantime we need to help each other deal with this annoyance.
